Johnny Mash or Jah Rootsman, Dub-Poet
eminent, is a Rastafarian elder living in
Eersterust, east of Pretoria, Gauteng,
South Africa.
1) He is the first reggae artist in South Africa
to use patois in his lyrics.
2) He was the first and still the only original
Dub-Poet in the country. (Poetry fused with the
Reggae Dub riddim).
3) He is the first South African Rastafari to
visit Jamaica and the Caribbean Islands.
4) He is one of the first founding fathers of
Rastafari in South Africa.
5) The first Nyahbingi in the country was
celebrated at his yard.
6) His music was the first South African
Reggae artist to be banned by SABC TV for
using "JAH" in his song "Lion inna Jungle".
7) He is the first Dub-Poet to be featured on
SABC TV.
8) He was first instrumental in organizing the
only two, most successful ever, Rastafari
Protest marches in Pretoria.
9) He was the first artist who opened the
"Africa Peace Concert" for Eric Donaldson,
Don Carlos and Andrew Tosh at the
Johannesburg Stadium
10) He is the first S.A. Dub-Poet to create and
launch his own Multi-Award Winning website:

11) He is the first and only S.A. Dub-Poet to
write, create, produce and release a
conscious, hardcore, audio / poetry CD,
'POEMS FROM THE KRYPT' together with a
brilliant, complimentary video compilation from

REDEMPTION the VID'.
12) His dynamic poem: 'The Bread of Life'
from that CD reached the No. 1 spot on the
'Reggae Dub Wise' Top Ten within 72 hours of
posting in February 2009 and the following
month; for 4 weeks, his CD, 'Poems from the
Krypt' held the Top Spot on the sister site,
'revolutionary dubgathersmusic.
13) He is the first Coffee Bar owner (Island
Coffee Bar) in Eersterust.
